Blood of North East NSW Forests on Boral's Woodchip Pile

4 March 99

Environmentalist, lawyer, Waverley local councillor and forest campaigner with Friends of the Earth in Sydney today poured a gallon of red paint over the woodchip pile at Boral's Kooragang island woodchip facility. The red paint contaminated the commercial woodchip product and symbolises the blood of koalas, gliders and quolls killed by the wildlife destroying woodchip based native forest logging industry. The news of "blood" contaminated woochips is being networked to Japanese woodchip customers.

This follows a 1,500 strong audience at the recent Forest Resurgence! event (28th March 99) at Sydney Town Hall where Boral's woodchipping of our best NSW forests was condemned by expert speakers. Mr McLoughlin was an organiser of that event.

Forest Resurgence! served to expose the new 20 year woodchip law passed by the ALP and Coalition in December 98 which released 800,000 hectares of our best forest in resource guarantees to Boral, Daishowa in Eden and others.

This follows recent moves by Newcastle and Byron councils to blacklist Boral.
